Volvo launches Polestar, a new brand that will compete with Tesla
Automotive NewsIt will focus on electrified models, built exclusively in China.
In mid-2019 Polestar 1 will be on the market, the first model of a new brand created by the Volvo Group, which will be built in modern and spectacular facilities in Chengdu (China), the same place where the S90 is born worldwide exclusively .
The Polestar 1 is a 2 + 2-seater coupé that uses Volvo’s modular SPA platform but shortened and with more than half of components developed by the new company’s engineers. “At the Frankfurt Motor Show two years ago we showed the prototype that gave rise to this model, our president, Hakan Samuelsson, posed this challenge and today we present a novel, elegant and beautiful great tourism that is the beginning of a new was, “commented Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar.
This product with which Polestar opens its range will be a plug-in hybrid, equipped with a gasoline propeller on the front axle and two electric motors, 80 kilowatts each, on the rear. The power of the set is equivalent to 600 horses, which together with a spectacular maximum torque [of 1,000 newton / meter], will allow you to go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in less than four seconds. The great novelty is its autonomy of 150 kilometers in electric mode, a distance that to date does not get any other car with this mechanical scheme. The secret is in its two large battery packs, one located in the central tunnel and one on the rear axle.
The Volvo Group, which since 2010 belongs to the Chinese company Geely, has invested 640 million euros in the launch of the brand and in the development of Polestar 1. It hardly has 100 employees, a number that will rise as it approaches the beginning of its production, although it is not shuffled large numbers of personnel, because the objective is to manufacture only 500 units per year.
The future Polestar, 100% electric
The following Polestar models will already be 100% electric. The Polestar 2 will arrive in late 2019, will have a higher level of sales, although always speaking of small quantities, and will resemble the Tesla Model 3 very much. The offer will be completed in 2021 with the appearance of a todocamino, Polestar 3, with a low ceiling and an appearance that they announce as powerful. According to plans already made public the group, in that year they committed to have five vehicles 100% electric, which, to these two would have to add another three of the Volvo brand.
The marketing and service system offered by Polestar will be based on Care by Volvo, which the Swedish brand has launched with the Volvo XC40. The customer will not buy the vehicle – which would have a final price of between 130,000 and 150,000 euros – but will do what they call a two or three year subscription. The payment of a monthly fee will include all maintenance costs, as well as the collection and return of the car at the point that is most convenient to the owner when it needs to pass through the workshop, and the possibility of using other Volvo models and Polestar.
The shopping experience will be another differentiating fact. Through internet, a test will be provided in the chosen place and the possible order will be formalized in the Network. The user who wishes will have occasion to approach one of the 80 “spaces” exclusive Polestar to configure the car to measure and to pick it up, unless you prefer to be delivered personally. The physical key will be replaced by a mobile phone application, which will allow the vehicle to be easily shared with third parties.
