Despite the ceaseless increase of visitors and exhibitors, the IAA was interrupted during the 1914-1921 war. Although the hall reopened in 1921, the war wounds are still fresh and the organization forbids the presence of foreign vehicles until the edition of 1926.

In 1939, just a few weeks before the start of World War II, the doors of the Motor Show were opened for the last time, which will remain closed until 1950, the first edition after the war.

In 1951 the headquarters of the German Motor Show moved from Berlin to Frankfurt. Since then, it is held every two years, alternating with the Paris Motor Show, which takes place in even years.

The year 1989 edition of the Frankfurt IAA was the most multitudinous, surpassing the million visitors a total of 1,200,000.
