New Audi A8, with smart active suspensions

Automotive News

The next A8 will arrive with an active suspension that in case of accident rises to minimize damages

A few days before its presentation at the next Audi Summit in Barcelona – next July 11 Audi is unveiling the characteristics of its flagship, the A8. A saloon that like the whole range combines comfort and sportsmanship on all four sides.

48 volts

The new Audi A8 demonstrates its versatility and performance on the go, thanks to a new active suspension based on a 48 volt electrical system as the main source.

With this new development the fully active electromechanical suspension system controls each wheel individually and adapts to road conditions. And it does so by placing in each wheel an electric motor that runs through the new main electrical system of 48 volts. In addition, it includes additional components including gears, a rotary shaft with an inner titanium bar and a lever that, through a coupling bar, exerts up to 1,100 Nm of torque on the suspension.

Like the system developed by Mercedes for its Class S Audi system is based on a front video camera that is reading the road and is able to predictively adjust the operation of the suspension. Even before the vehicle reaches the bump, the anticipation function developed by Audi transmits to the actuators the level of displacement that they have to realize to control the movements of the suspension. In this way, the suspension reacts precisely at the right time, virtually eliminating the possible vibrations and jolts. This complex process takes place in just a few milliseconds, with the camera generating information on the surface of the road 18 times per second. The electronic chassis platform (ECP) processes information and accurately controls all elements of the suspension in near real-time. In combination with the air suspension, evolved for the new Audi A8, the innovative active suspension concept will offer a totally new driving experience with more comfort and the dynamism of the brand’s sports cars.

Directional rear axle for the new Audi A8

Less rocking

One of the advantages of the new active suspension is that the body balances are minimized in the side curves – and also in the accelerations and brakes, maintaining at all times a stability that improves the dynamics of the car.

In addition, the innovative combination of dynamic steering and the directional rear axle solves the conflict between agility and stability, with dynamic steering on all four wheels. The steering adjustments are direct and sporty, while guaranteeing precision and high stability, with the smoothness required for maximum comfort when necessary. With this development, in addition, the turning radius of the new Audi A8 is announced even smaller than that of an Audi A4.

Audi pre sense 360 °

Another innovative element of the new A8 is the safety system Audi pre sense 360 °, with which the suspension rises up to 80 mm in case of possible lateral accident. The system uses the network-connected sensors of the central driver assistance controller (zFAS) to detect the risks of a possible collision. In case of an imminent lateral impact at more than 25 km / h, the suspension actuators raise the body up to a total of 80 mm in just half a second. As a result, the collision targets the more reinforced areas of the luxury saloon, such as the side bolsters and floor structure, reducing the burden on the vehicle occupants in the impact by 50 percent compared to a A similar situation in which the vehicle body would not rise.
