HELLA and ZF form a strategic alliance for the development of sensor technologies

Automotive News

HELLA and ZF have developed a strategic collaboration agreement. Both suppliers in the automotive sector will benefit from this cooperation in sensor technology, in particular for front camera systems, imaging and radar systems. In this way, HELLA will lead the technological development and access to a more extensive market through its technologies, while ZF will strengthen its portfolio as a provider of assistance systems and autonomous driving functions. The first joint project for the development of camera technology will start immediately, with the aim of launching it in 2020.

Dr. Rolf Breidenbach, CEO of HELLA KGaA Hueck & Co., has emphasized that “HELLA is a strong and experienced supplier of sensor technologies. Our knowledge aligns perfectly with the ZF experience. By combining our strengths, the common goal is to provide market-leading, high-performance assistance systems as well as stand-alone driving functions. In addition, this cooperation will strengthen HELLA’s position as a recognized provider of imaging technologies and radar sensors. ”

“This strategic partnership with HELLA improves our position as a global supplier for modern assistive systems as well as autonomous driving functions,” adds Dr. Stefan Sommer, CEO of ZF Friedrichshafen AG. “This cooperation is a significant expansion of our Vision Zero partnership ecosystem. Therefore, we can create a broader technological base for safety and autonomous driving. ”

Front cameras to get the best Euro NCAP rating

In their first joint project, partners are moving towards a current market trend: in the future, Euro NCAP’s higher safety ratings will require camera-assisted support functions. Therefore, the demand for front cameras in all vehicle segments will increase. HELLA and ZF will offer car manufacturers a jointly developed product that has already begun work with a view to launching it in 2020. HELLA and its subsidiary HELLA Aglaia Mobile Vision provide expertise in its already proven and efficient software. Images and application development. For its part, ZF contributes its hardware and experience in functions, systems and integration.

In the medium and long term, both partners will also provide camera systems for autonomous driving functions, as well as for commercial vehicles and special vehicles. ZF expands its portfolio of cameras and offers its customers new options. HELLA Aglaia obtains a new client and partner for its independent and open software solutions in driver assistance systems.

Long-term collaboration for the development of radar systems

As a result of this cooperation, both partners will also identify opportunities to offer attractive short and medium term production solutions through the joint construction of their product portfolio. HELLA’s 360 ° Envelope Vision Radar Systems, along with ZF’s medium- and long-range radar systems, will establish a new, comprehensive solution. While joint development will focus on this segment, each partner will continue to offer its own technology independently at the component level. Here the true potential of this long-term partnership lies in the ability to use the common system architecture as well as product families that adapt to each other.
