Gestamp inaugurates new R & D center in JapanAutomotive News
Automotive component manufacturer Gestamp has launched a new R & D center in Japan, which replaces and improves the company’s existing capabilities in the country.
Located in the heart of Tokyo, the center is equipped with simulation resources, including virtual crash testing or advanced simulation of hot stamping processes. This will allow Gestamp to have the full development capability of a vehicle in chassis and bodywork with the best standards of the group.
The R & D center will have a workforce of over 60 workers. This new facility will allow the company to implement high technology at an early stage and will become the hub of R & D in Japan, complemented by engineering teams working directly at customer sites.
In this way, customers will be able to count on this knowledge near their facilities to create new concepts and integrate the patents of Gestamp in their new platforms. The center will be part of the global R & D network of the group consisting of 12 facilities and one under construction.
In the field of body, Gestamp will investigate thoroughly in its patents of ‘soft zone’, through which it manages to integrate different properties in the same piece. In chassis, the group will implement its optimization process that saves time and money to manufacturers, while offering different solutions with the best ratios of satisfaction and performance.
From this reference center in R & D for Japan, Gestamp will be able to develop projects jointly with the Japanese clients. To date there are a dozen ongoing projects co-developed from these new facilities.
Gestamp will be able thanks to these facilities to carry out the complete development of bodywork and chassis of any vehicle. This will give continuity to a know-how that began in 2009, when the first engineers of the group began to develop within the R & D centers of manufacturers (as resident engineers) joint models such as the Honda Civic.
“Gestamp goes one step further in strengthening our relationships with Japanese customers, with whom we want to continue to grow solidly and durably,” said Gestamp president and CEO Francisco J. Riberas. “Thanks to our global presence we will be able to support manufacturers in their local manufacture by facilitating the transfer of technology,” he added.
In this sense, the head of Gestamp remarked that “this center will promote the joint development of projects with Japanese manufacturers and will consolidate a strategy that we have been developing in recent years.”
Tokyo’s R & D center is thus added to the plant that Gestamp builds in the town of Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture, which will be operational in the first half of 2018. The new plant will involve an initial investment of 37 million Of euros, which can reach up to 65 million euros in a second expansion. It is planned that 70 people work in it in a first phase.
Gestamp will manufacture in its new plant in Japan metallic components of body with the technology of hot embossing, key for manufacturing lighter and safer vehicles and in which the multinational company Spanish is world-wide leader.
With the start of its industrial activity in Japan and the start-up of the new R & D center, Gestamp hopes to strengthen its strategic relationship with Japanese car manufacturers, including Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Suzuki.
