Audi bets on electric and ‘speaks in kilowatts’Automotive News
The Audi A8 will be the first model of the German brand to collect this designation in the fall of 2017. In its case the 3.0 TDI 210 kW (286 hp) will be called A8 50 TDI, while 3.0 TFSI 250 kW (340 CV) will do it as A8 55 TFSI. In the case of the versions S, RS and Audi R8 will not have any modification in its designation.
The denominations of the model (A1, A2, A3, etc.) will not receive any change either. This measure will not only be for combustion engines, it is also for hybrids and electric.
The arrival of the electric in the near future will de-emphasize the power figures as we know them today and, in any case, will make “let’s talk in kW”. “As alternative propulsion technologies become more and more important, engine capacity as an attribute of engine performance is becoming less important for our customers,” said Dietmar Voggenreiter, Director of Sales and Marketing at Audi AG.
In the coming months all new models that Audi launches to the market will adopt this new nomenclature, as will all restyling and new models expected from 2018 onwards.
